Matthew Walsh joined in the firm in 2000 as our special counsel in income tax and revenue law.
He was for thirty years a partner and former chairman of an international law firm. He established that firm’s tax team and was for many years its leader.
Matthew for many years was a leading author on the subject of taxation of trusts and capital gains tax and was the author of a principal work on unit trusts (modern trusts taxation).
He is a past Chairman of Taxation Institute of Australia (Victoria) and a former member of Taxation Liaison Committee of the Commissioner of Taxation and the Law Council of Australia and the Law Institute of Victoria Taxation Committees.
Matthew’s principal areas of practice include State and Federal taxation with emphasis on corporate tax and international tax; his other areas of practice include commercial and contract law; trusts, especially public unit trusts; joint ventures; building and engineering contracts.
He has considerable experience in corporate and trust restructuring; foreign investment in Australia; liquidation of companies, equitable rights and remedies.
He acts from time to time as a mediator, an arbitrator and an expert.
